Wind mitigation inspection on Long Island and in New York City

A wind mitigation inspection records the features of your house that help it stand up to a windstorm, so your insurance company can see them on paper. Lou does them across Long Island, New York City and Westchester.

Why your insurer cares

New York’s Department of Financial Services says insurers are required to offer premium discounts when a homeowner has installed hurricane or storm shutters, or hurricane-resistant laminated glass windows and doors, on all exterior wall openings — as long as they meet the prescribed minimum standards and were installed to the manufacturer’s specifications.

The same DFS guide explains that homes near the shore can carry hurricane or windstorm deductibles, and that the New York Property Insurance Underwriting Association (NYPIUA) applies a 2% hurricane deductible to Broad Form policies in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and the five boroughs.

What Lou looks at

The openings. The windows, doors and garage doors on the outside walls: whether each one is protected by shutters or laminated glass, and whether the product labels and installation can be seen. The DFS discount covers all exterior openings, so one unprotected window matters.

The roof. The covering, the shape of the roof, and how it is fastened to the house, as far as it can be seen from outside and from the attic.

Photographs of each item, so your insurer is not asked to take anyone’s word for it.

Before you book, ask your insurer which inspection form it accepts. Tell Lou when you call — he will confirm the form and the price for your home.

A builder’s eye, not a checklist

Lou spent thirty years in residential and commercial construction before he was an inspector. He is a licensed New York home inspector (Licence #16000039568) and an InterNACHI member, and he answers the phone himself.

He does not sell shutters, windows or roofing, and he does not take a fee for sending you to someone who does.
